Repeat blockages

Why do my drains keep blocking?

Repeated blockages often point to a damaged joint, roots, poor pipe fall or waste that was never fully removed.

The original blockage was only partly cleared

Pushing a narrow hole through grease or soft waste may let water pass for a short time. Material left on the pipe wall soon catches more waste.

High-pressure jetting can clean the full bore where the pipe is suitable. Flow testing then shows whether the drain is truly clear.

02

Fat, wipes and household waste keep entering

Cooking fat cools and sticks to pipe walls. Wipes do not break down like toilet paper. Together they form a tough blockage.

Changing what enters the drain matters after clearing. Bin wipes, sanitary items, nappies, cotton buds and food fat.

  • Wipe greasy pans before washing
  • Collect cooled fat in a container
  • Flush only toilet paper and human waste
  • Use sink strainers for food scraps
  • Keep cement, grout and paint out of drains

03

A joint has moved or cracked

Older clay drains are built from short sections. Ground movement can open a joint, creating an edge that catches paper and allowing soil or roots to enter.

CCTV footage can show the defect. A local patch may repair one joint without digging when the pipe still holds its shape.

04

Tree roots are growing inside

Roots follow moisture through an existing gap. Fine roots catch waste, while thicker growth reduces the pipe opening.

Cutting clears the immediate restriction. Repairing the entry point helps stop the same route from reopening.

05

The pipe has sunk or was laid badly

Wastewater needs a steady fall. A low section can hold water and solids even when the rest of the pipe is clear.

Relining cannot correct a major backfall. Excavation and replacement may be needed where the pipe level is the cause.

06

Use evidence before paying for another clearance

If the same drain blocks repeatedly, record when it happens and which fixtures are affected. A camera survey after cleaning can reveal the underlying fault.

Ask for the defect location and a plain explanation of repair options. This helps avoid repeating the same short-term job.
